The Social Context of Reported Rape in Benin City, Nigeria

Francisco Isi Omorodion, Olubamidele Olusanya

Abstract

This study examined the social context of rape in Benin City, Nigeria, through analysis of rape cases reported to a police clinic in the city. The results showed that female adolescents were more likely than older women to present to the clinic as rape victims. The most common type of reported rape was gang rape followed by domestic rape, while rape involving unknown assailants, was less common. The police clinic lacked counselling procedures to address the associated psychological effects of rape. We conclude that a multidisciplinary approach, including appropriate policy and legal frameworks, is needed to more comprehensively address the complex psycho-social issues associated with rape in Benin City.
