African Journal of Reproductive Health: 26 years and soaring

Friday Okonofua, Karl E. Eimuhi

Abstract

In June 2022, the African Journal of Reproductive Health (AJRH) will be celebrating the 26th year of its founding. Originally designed to publish innovative research and documentations relating to sexual and reproductive health and rights in and about Africa, the journal now plays a dominant role in scientific discourses around rights and social justice relevant to international development planning in the fields of population and women’s health. Within the short period of its establishment, the journal recorded several successes in many domains.  It was the first international journal that documented events, research, and programming in reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa at the emergence of the “paradigm shift’ and the new reproductive health doctrine. Following the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, Egypt in 1994, and the fourth World Conference in Beijing, China in 1995, it was evident that the African continent was the tailback of the rights and social justice denial that dominated the discourse in both conferences.

The coming of the AJRH in 1997 to document subsequent events on sexual and reproductive health and rights promotion and development was therefore a purposefully and appropriately designed innovation to address the challenge within the context of the African continent. Since then, the AJRH has not only propelled the development of women’s and reproductive health and rights in the continent, it has helped African countries to develop new ways of thinking about health, rights and social justice in a more holistic way, and in building a new cohort of adherents and researchers in the continent.
